Screws
Screws are used in electronics manufacturing to secure electronic components in mounting enclosures, for example. They are also used for a variety of applications in mechanical engineering and the automotive industry. They can be tightened either by machine or by hand and are often used alongside washers and nuts. Despite the increasing miniaturization of devices, screws remain an important connecting and fastening technology for the future.
Different types of screws are needed depending on safety considerations, the space available, weather conditions and other technical requirements. Despite the many different styles of screws, the manufacturing process is essentially the same. The material, generally a spool of steel wire, is first cut to the right length and then milled to the right shape at room temperature. This process is called “cold forming”. The screw head is then formed and the thread on the screw is produced using thread rolling or cutting techniques (in certain cases this step may take place after the following heat treatment). During the heat treatment the screw is subjected to extremely high temperatures in order to harden the steel and therefore optimize the strength of the screw. Finally, depending on the customer's requirements and application, a surface coating can be applied to ensure better durability, e.g. an electroplated coating for increased corrosion resistance.
Many types of screws are available
Our product range includes a large variety of standard screws as well as compatible nuts and washers. We also offer the option of custom production and made-to-order parts. As you would expect, we are also experts in large-series production. Please do not hesitate to contact us!
In addition to standard screws, our range of screws also includes SEMS screws, captive screws, sealing screws, knurled screws, contact screws, collar screws, set screws and screws with threadlocker. Standard screws such as stainless steel screws, pan head screws, hex head screws, Torx screws, self-tapping screws, tapping screws, as well as self-clinching studs are available immediately in a variety of styles and in large quantities from our extensive stock.
We can also supply hanger bolts, roofing screws, drywall screws, eye bolts and many other types of screws specially on request. We are happy to provide you with a customized quote – get in touch for more information!
Screws with a variety of different head shapes are available online from ETTINGER:
- Flat head (= mushroom head, round head, pan head)
- Raised cheese head
- Countersunk head
- Raised countersunk head (= raised head)
- Hexagon head (= hexagon screw = lag screw)
- Cylinder head (= socket head cap screws)
In the ETTINGER online shop you can order screws with the following drive styles:
- slotted
- cross recess (Phillips) “PH”
- cross recess (Pozidriv) “PZ”
- Torx®
- hexagon socket head
- hexagon screw
Most of our screws are made of steel in thread sizes M1.2 to M12. We also supply screws made of brass, aluminum and plastic.
Steel screws are divided into different strength grades using the numbers 4.6, 8.8 and 12.9. This makes it very easy to determine their tensile strength (first number; 4.6) and yield strength (second number; 4.6).
For use in corrosive environments, stainless steel is also worth considering in addition to brass and plastic. The most commonly used stainless steel grades for screws are A2 and A4. The A stands for austenitic steels, which have excellent ductility, resilience, and corrosion resistance. The number indicates the type of steel. A2 is used as standard, whereas A4 stainless steel screws are used, for example, in coastal regions because of the high salt content in the air. A4 screws are also used in areas near chlorinated water (which contains acid) and in the food and chemicals industries.
Order you chosen screws easily online, even in high quantities!
In contrast to stainless steel screws, a protective coating is required on normal steel screws if they are used in corrosive conditions. We offer different surface treatment finishing processes.
