Self-clinching nuts are press-fit nuts with a serration under the head and a groove. If you require strong screw connections in sheet metal, then self-clinching nuts are a good choice. By pressing the self-clinching nut into the pre-made hole, the cold-forming process evenly distributes the displaced base material into the groove on the nut. This ensures a very durable and reliable fastening, which is protected against axial movement and rotation, and with no damage to the surface of the material due to heat exposure. Self-clinching nuts do not impact on the back side of the sheet metal and installation is easy thanks to their self-centering shank design. They are also suitable for automated assembly where required. At ETTINGER, we offer self-clinching nuts in a range of steel grades and sizes so you can find the right nuts to suit your materials.
Self-clinching nuts for metals
For installation in thin sheet metal and other metallic electronic components, you can choose from the following options:
- for sheet metal up to HRB 80: carbon steel – case-hardened, zinc plated and passivated
- for sheet metal up to HRB 70: steel – corrosion-resistant, passivated 18/8 (AISI 303)
- Thread: M2, M2.5, M3, M4, M5, M6, M8 and M10
- Design: undercut, knurled shoulder or thread
For components with limited space, we recommend the compact miniature self-clinching nuts from our product range. They are suitable for metals up to HRB 70 and available in thread sizes M2 to M4. For thin-walled materials with limited installation space, our rivet nuts are available as an alternative to self-clinching nuts. These can be installed without deforming the base material.
Self-clinching nuts for plastics
Our self-clinching nuts for plastics are suitable for embedding in printed circuit boards, fiber glass, nylon, acrylic glass, epoxy and phenolic resins as well as in cast aluminum and magnesium up to HRB 60. They are made of case-hardened, tin-plated carbon steel or corrosion-resistant, passivated steel 18/8 (AISI 300). These fasteners are available from ETTINGER in thread sizes M2, M2.5, M3, M4 and M5. The exact dimensions, information on hole diameters, and the minimum distance required from the hole to the edge can be found on page 187 of our product catalog.
